So I would like to figure out how to convert feet into square yards for myself so they can't take advantage of me. My room is 24 ft. long and 17 ft. wide. You need to convert the dimensions of the room from feet to yards. There are 3 feet in a yard so

24 ft = ²⁴/₃ = 8 yards
17 ft = ¹⁷/₃ = 5.67 yards

Thus the amount of carpet you need is

8 5.67 = 45.3 square yards.
