A boat travels 60 miles upstream against the current in 3 hours. It takes 2 hours for the return trip. Find the speed of the boat in still water.

Hi,

Suppose that the speed of the boat in still water is s miles per hour and the speed of the water is w miles per hour. Going upstream against the boat takes 3 hours to go 60 miles. Thus, since distance equals time times rate

60 = 3 (s - w)

Use the return trip to write a second equation relating distance, time and rate.

Solve the two equations for s.
