Hi, I have got this school homework and it's too complicated for me. PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!
1.A regular octagon is to be cut out of a square piece of metal which has sides of 1 metre. What will be the length of the sides of the octagon?
2.What will be the area of the octagon?

Thank You Very Much...
Veronica

Hi Veronica,

Let x meters be the length of the side of the octagon and look at the triangular piece you cut from the square.

This is a right triangle with side lengths (1-x)/2, (1-x)/2 and x meters. Use Pythagoras theorem and solve for x.
