factoring:

4(x+1)2+y(x+1)

Hi Danielle,

In any factoring problem you should first look for any common factors. That is any factor that is common to all the terms. In this problem there is an (x+1) in each term so you can extract it as a common factor. Thus

4(x+1)2+y(x+1) = (x+1)[4(x+1)+y] = (x+1)(4x+y+1)

Penny
