Subject: repeating decimal notation

Name: Clarende Duby

Question: I have seen single repeating decimals for ex. 1/3 = 0.3 with the dot above the 3 to represent the repeating decimal. Then, there is the more common form of the bar over the top of the repeating number or group of numbers (called the period?). Which notation is correct?

Thank you for your assistance.
Clarende

Hi Clarende,

I too have seen both notations and I agree that the bar notation is more common than the dot notation. In fact I think the dot notation is quite rare. I would not say either is "correct" but I would use the bar notation as it is much more likely to be understood by others.
