QUESTION: The product of two consecutive page numbers in this book is 4160. What are the page numbers?

Hi Jessica,

I would do this problem with an estimate and then "guess and check".

The two numbers you are to multiply together to get 4160 are very close, they only differ by 1. If they were equal and you multiplied them to get 4160 then the number would be the square root of 4160. Use your calculator to find the square root of 4160 and then either round up or down to get an integer. This is the estimate for one of the two numbers.

If this rounded square root is n then try n and n + 1 or n and n - 1 or ... You must be very close to the correct numbers.

Cheers,
Penny
