Hi My name is Lily,I am a 5th grade student.

I need help with mutiplying decimals (example) 2.28*0.48( * = times).

I NEED HELP!!!!!!

Hi Lily,

First just ignore the decimals and multiply the numbers.

Next add the number of digits to the right of the decimal point in the multiplyer and the multiplicand. Here you have two digits to the right of the decimal point in the multiplyer (0.48) and two digits to the right of the decimal point in the multiplicand (2.28) and hence the sum is 2 + 2 = 4. Place the decimal point in the answer so that there are 4 digits to the right of the decimal point. That is the answer is 1.0944.

You can use approximation to check that you have the decimal in the correct place. 0.48 is a little less than 0.5 which is one half. One half of 2.28 is 1.14 and hence your answer should be a little less than 1.14.

I hope this helps,
Harley
