Pete

Stacie and Kacie each have a jar. Stacies jar holds 5Êquarts of water and Kacies jar holds 3 quarts. The girls dad ask them to go get him some water from the pump and to get him 1 gallon of water (NO MORE NO LESS) The jars were not marked in any way. In ten minutes the girls where back with 1 gallon. How did they get exactly 1 gallon ?

1) there are two ways to do it I only no one. 1st answer is.....

The girls would first get the 5 quart jar and fill it all the way to the top. Then they would pour it in to the 3 quart jar until full to the top. Then they wouold throw out those three quarts and stay with 2 in the 5 quart jar. Now with no water in the 3 quart jar they pour those 2 in. Now they had nothing in the 5 quart jar. So they fill the 5 quart again. One more quart out of the 5 quart and the were home free so they poured one quart into the 3 quart jar and it had two quarts in it so now they have 1 gallon in the five quart jar and they throw out the 3 quart water and went home. Now i need one more answer there is another way to do this so i want to no if u no.

Thanks alot
Pete

Hi Pete,

You have the right idea with your solution but there is a flaw in it.

At this point you have 2 quarts in the 3 quart jar and 5 quarts in the 5 quart jar. Pour one quart from the 5 quart jar to fill the 3 quart jar. Empty the 3 quart jar and now you have 4 quarts in the 5 quart jar. Fill the 3 quart jar from the 5 quart jar leaving 1 quart in the 5 quart jar.One more quart out of the 5 quart and the were home free so they poured one quart into the 3 quart jar and it had two quarts in it so now they have 1 gallon in the five quart jar and they throw out the 3 quart water and went home. Now i need one more answer there is another way to do this so i want to no if u no. A second solution begins as follows. Fill the 3 quart jar and then pour it into the 5 quart jar. Do you see what to do next?
