Hi

My name is Rina. I just wanted to ask if you could help me in math. See I'm having a test soon and its on Dividing Fractions and I just don't get it. My math teacher says that I'll be just fine but I failed my math quiz. I went to ask eric but they could help me so they told me to go to you. So here I am asking you if you could help me.

Bye,
Rina

P.S I'm in 6th grade.

Hi Rina,

There is a technique that is used to divide fractions and I think there are two steps to learning this technique. First you need to see why this technique works and then you have to practice so that you get good at it. To see why the technique works I think that a money example helps.

Suppose that you have $20.00 and you ask " if I divide the $20.00 into $5.00 portions, how many portions are there?" The answer is clearly 4. That is

Likewise if I have $20.00 and I want to divide it into 25 cent portions (25 cents is $1/4) I get 80 portions. That is As a final example if I have 75 cents and I divide it into 25 cent portions I get 3. That is

What I want you to see in the last example is that if you "invert the fraction in the denominator and multiply" you get the same answer. That is

Likewise with the second example

This is the technique for dividing fractions. You invert the fraction in the denominator and multiply. So, for one more example

Now you need to practice so that you get good at it.

One final note. If the denominator is an integer, say 5, the write 5 as  5/1 and apply the technique.

Cheers,
Penny
