I have two questions.

  1. Do you know of any (or where I can find) student motivators for math at the secondary level? Basically any way I can motivate my students to WANT to learn math.

  2. I am looking for a before and after activity for my high school students to show them that they do know math. Something to show them that their preconceived notions and fears about math are incorrect and they know more than they think they do.

Thank you very much!

Hi Michelle,

I can give you one suggestion for question 1. At the University of Waterloo they have some information called You Can Do THAT with a Math Degree? Especially interesting is the link to Success comes in many different bmath packages. This link contains profiles of some of their graduates, what they studied and where they are working. It gives an indication of how mathematics is important in areas that might seem a long ways from mathematics.

Cheers,
Penny
