Joe used 1/3 cup of olive oil, which was 3/4 of the amount that he had. How much olive oil did he have!

This is a middle question as far as level. I'm the mother, who can't explain it to my son.

Thanks for your help - preferably this evening - due tomorrow! Thanks!

Hi Annie,

I would try to explain the problem with a diagram. Suppose that joe has the olive oil in a container filled to the top, and that there are marks on the container at the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 levels, as in the diagram below.

What you know is that up to the 3/4 mark is 1/3 of a cup. From the diagram that is a total of three three levels and hence each level is 1/3rd of 1/3 of a cup. That is each level is 1/9th of a cup. Thus the container holds 4/9 of a cup.

I hope this helps,
Penny
