Question:

Here is the exact problem as stated on my child's math worksheet.
Change each mixed number to a whole number and an improper fraction which is less than 2.

3 1/2 = 2 /
this is only one out of 14 of which I have racked my brains and looked in every book I could find for help. Can you help???????

Hi Dawn,
You have

3 ^{1}/_{2}
and you want to find a way to write this mixed number in the form
2 ^{?}/_{??}
Three and one half is one and one half more than 2 (that is 3 ^{1}/_{2} - 2 = 1 ^{1}/_{2}) thus the fraction ^{?}/_{??} must be 1 ^{1}/_{2}. But you want an improper fraction so write 1 ^{1}/_{2} as ^{3}/_{2}. Thus

3 ^{1}/_{2} = 2 ^{3}/_{2}.
I hope this helps,

Penny
