how do you find the cubic feet/cubic yard of area 10 feet wide by 15 ft long by 2 inches high

Hi John,

You need to get all three measurements in the same units. If you want cubic feet then you need all three dimensions in feet. Since 12 inches is 1 foot, 2 inches is  2/12 = 1/6  of a foot. Hence a region which is 10 feet by 15 feet by 2 inches is

10 x 15 x 1/6 = 25 cubic feet.

To find the volume in cubic yards first express all the dimensions in yards. 1 yard is 3 feet which is 36 inches so

10 feet = 10/3 yards,
15 feet = 15/3 yards,
2 inches = 2/36 yards.
Thus the volume is  10/3 x  15/3 x  2/36 = 0.9259 cubic yards.

Penny
