Subject: Printer number question

Question:
I have a question that I keep making mistakes on and can't seem to get the answer. Here it is: A printer uses 1008 digits to number the pages of a book. How many pages are there in the book?
Thank you for helping,
Lucy
Hi Lucy,
- The first 9 pages take one digit each (1,2,3,...,9)
For a total of 9 digits.
- The next 90 pages take 2 digits each (10,11,12,13,...,99)
for total of 2 x 90 = 180 digits
To this point, in 99 pages, you have used 9 + 180 = 189 digits. Thus you have
1008 + 189 = 819 digits left. How many "three digit" pages can you number with 819 digits?
Cheers,
Penny
