There are many patterns:

6, 7, 9, 8, 6, 8, 6 (number of letters in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday respectively)

6, 7.5, 9, 10.5, 12, ... (add 1.5 everytime)

6, 7.34847, 9, 11.02270, 13.5, ... (multiply by the square root of 1.5 everytime)

6, 7, 9, 12, 16, ... (add 1 then 2 then 3 then...)

In short, there is not enough information for any kind of pattern to emerge. Your son should realize that there is not always only one pattern that fits any small amount of information. Maybe that was the reason for this problem.
