Quandaries and Queries

Hope you can help with this. It has been a long time since I did this kind of math.

If there is an 80ft climb over a kilometer(about 3280ft) what is the percentage grade of that hill?

I cannot tell you the level of the question. I am not a teacher or a student but a runner who is trying to figure this out for a run coming up.

Thanks,
Cathy

Hi Cathy,

The percentage grade is the slope, written as a percent. To calculate the slope you divide the rise by the run. In your example the rise is 80 ft over a run of 3280 ft so the slope is  80/3280 = 0.024. Written as aa percent this is 2.4 %.

Good luck on your run,
Penny
