Question: Two review questions have been stumping my daughter and I and we need to do these to prepare for a test.

  1. Find the orthocentre of the triangle with vertices at A(-3,4), B(10, -3) and C(3,-2).

  2. Find the distance of point X(3,8) from the line that passes through Y(-2, -2) and Z (3, -2).

Hi Elsie,

#2 is easier than it looks -- just draw an accurate figure.

#1 involves tedious calculations. The answer is just some point with coordinates that are not integers. The only way to find the orthocentre is to find the equations of two of the altitudes, then find the coordinates of the point where they intersect.
