Quandaries and Queries

This is a basic algebra question. I am a homeschool teacher and need some assistance with this problem. The problem is with fractional exponants:
10 1/3 mult. by 10,000 The 1/3 is an exponant of 10.

Thank you
Jill

Hi Jill,

You haven't stated the problem but I expect it is to simplify the exprression

10 1/3 10,000. 10,000 is 10 10 10 10 which can be written 10 4 and hence 10 1/3 10,000 = 10 1/3 10 4

The important fact that you need to use here is that if you are to multiply two powers that have the same base, you can add the exponents. That is for any a, b and c,

ab ac = ab + c Thus in your example 10 1/3 10 4 = 104 + 1/3 = 10 13/3

I hope this helps,
Penny
