Subject: Swimming Pool

Sent From Natalia Independent School District By Sarah

A swimming pool is being filled by three pumps. Alone pump A would take 6 hours, pump B would take 3 hours, and pump C would take 3 hours. If all three pumps are used to fill the pool, what fraction of the process is pump A.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Sarah,

Pump A would fill the pool in 6 hours and pump B in three hours. Hence pump B would fill 2 pools in 6 hours. Likewise pump C would fill 2 pools in 6 hours. Thus, if there were 5 pools, then working together the 3 pumps could fill them in 6 hours. Pump A would have filled one pool in this time, thus doing one-fifth of the work.

Cheers,
Penny
