I am a parent and I need an answer please. If you have a problem 27.27 and you need to round to the first 7 the answer would be 27

Would 27.0 be acceptable as well or is it completely wrong.

Thank you.

Hi,

If you are asked to round 27.27 to the first 7 then the correct answer is 27. This, however, is an unusual way to ask the question. I would have expected the question to say "round 27.27 to the nearest integer" or perhaps "round to two significant digits".

If you write 27.0 then this indicates that the first digit after the decimal rounds to zero. If you are rounding and you tell me the answer is 27 then I know that the number before you rounded was between 26.5 and 27.4. However, if you tell me the answer is 27.0 then I think that the number before rounding was between 26.95 and 27.04.

I hope this helps,
Penny
