Question:
$100 is split between four guys. A,B, C, and D. How much money does if person get if B has four more dollars than A, C has 8 more dollars than B, and D has twice as much money as C?
Hi Stephan,
Suppose that A has a dollars, B has b dollars, C has c dollard and D has d dollars. There are five facts given.
$100 is split between four guys.
a + b + c + d = 100
B has four more dollars than A
b = a + 4
C has 8 more dollars than B
c = b + 8
D has twice as much money as C
d = 2c
Now, working from the bottom up, substitute the latter three euqations into the first. d = 2c and hence
100 = a + b + c + d = a + b + c + 2c = a + b + 3c
c = b + 8 and hence
100 = a + b + 3c = a + b + 3(b + 8) = a + 4b + 24
Finally substitute b = a + 4 and solve for a.
