A 2000 L tank containing 550 L of water is being filled with water at the rate of 75 L per minute from a full 1600 L tank. How long will it be before the two tanks have the same amount of water?

I can solve the problem to get an answer, but cannot figure out how to put it in algebra formula.

Hi,

Every minute you transfer 75 L from the second tank to the first tank, so in x minutes you transfer 75 x L. Hence after x minutes there are 550 + 75 x L in the first tank and 1600 - 75 x L in the second tank. Thus the two tanks have the same amount of water when

550 + 75 x L = 1600 - 75 x L

Cheers,
Penny
