I am trying to determine how much top soil I must purchase (by the yard).

The area is 80' x 15' and I want it 3" thick. How many cubic yards must I purchase?

Hi Walt,

I would first change all the measurements to yards. There are 3 feet in a yard so your garden is  80/3 = 26.67 yards long and  15/3 = 5 yards wide. There are 36 inches in a yard so the soil depth is  3/36 = 0.08 yards deep. Hence the volume of soil is

26.67 5 0.08 = 11 cubic yards
