How do I work out the volume and weight of water in a fish tank that is 36in x 14in x 12in?

Bill

Thank you

Hi Bill,

The volume of the tank is calculated by multiplying the three dimensions, that is

volume = 36 14 12 = 6048 cubic inches.

You haven't said what units you want to use for weight, but since your measurements are in inches I am going to assume that you want the weight in pounds. The density of water is 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. a cubic foot is 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches, hence

one cubic foot = 12 12 12 = 1728 cubic inches. Thus your tank is 6048/1728 = 3.5 cubic feet. Each cubic foot weighs 64.2 pounds so the water in your tank weigh 62.4  3.5 = 218.4 pounds.
