I am wondering how many yards of cement I need for a 49 by 45 area, 5 inches thick. I am a stay at home mom who is not very good at math and I want to pave my drive way. Also what would the yardage be for a 6 inch thick drive way with the same area.

The word "yards", as used by contractors really means cubic yards. I assume that the 49 and 45 you state are in feet and hence you need to change the units to yards.

49 feet = ⁴⁹/₃ = 16.33 yards

45 feet = ⁴⁵/₃ = 15 yards

5 inches = ⁵/_{3 12} = 0.139 yards

6 inches = ⁶/_{3 12} = 0.167 yards

16.33 15 0.139 = 34.0 cubic yards

16.33 15 0.167 = 40.8 cubic yards
