Quandaries and Queries

My name is Jackie. I am in grade 10 doing M4 Algebra 2, which is advanced.

I am having trouble solving this question for x:

1.) x2/3 - 7 x1/3 + 12 = 0

Hi Jackie,

What I see is that x2/3 is the square of x1/3 and hence the equation looks to me like

(some quantity)2 -7 (the same quantity) + 12 = 0,

so I would proceed with a substitution.

Let y = x1/3. The equation then becomes

y2 -7 y + 12 = 0

Solve for y and then find x using y = x1/3.
