Question: Given that the universal set S is the set of all sports fans, and

F={x|x is a football fan}
B={x|x is a basketball fan}
H={x|x is a hockey fan}
a)Describe (F^B)' (f intersect b)' in words
b)Draw a Venn Diagram and shade the region that represents the set of football fans or both basketball and hockey fans.

Hi Jason,

(F intersect B) is all the sports fans who are both football fans and basketball fans. (F intersect B)' is all the sports fans who are not in (F intersect B). To complete part a) you need to describe this in an English sentence. I would use an either, or construction.

Commas are important in English. I read part b) as

the set of football fans, or both basketball and hockey fans In the Venn diagram shade the region inside the F circle to show the set of football fans and then shade the region that is inside both the B and H circles to indicate the sports fans who are both basketball and hockey fans.
