Quandaries and Queries

My name is Joe and this is a college level thing. I am a student.

I have 4 things to do and I don’t know how…There are 4 problems they go like this….

Let x be a real number find and graph the solution to the following sentances:

2x-10<x+1
7x8>+9
4X+2<15
5X+3>(x-1)

Please help

Hi Joe,

With a little care you can solve these inequalities in the same way you would solve an equality (equation). For example with your first problem. If it were an equation you would have

2x - 10 = x + 1

Subtract x from both sides to get

x - 10 = 1

Add 10 to both sides

x = 11

Now replace the = by <

2x - 10 < x + 1

Subtract x from both sides to get

x - 10 < 1

Add 10 to both sides

x < 11

The "extra care" you have to take is in the situation where you need to multiply both sides of the inequality by some number. If the multiplyer is negative then the inequality changes direction. For example if you have

-2x < 10

and you multiply both sides by 1/2 then you get

x > -5
