My nine year old son has been given the following homework to do and we are all baffled! " Draw 4, 6 and 8 sided shapes so that ONE straight line can be drawn through each side" I am sure there must be an obvious answer for this but really can't work it out! Any advice would be gratefully received! Merrill |

Hi Marrill, Draw horizontal lines AB, CD, ... (A on left, B on right, C on left, D on right...) whose endpoints are joined to the neighbors by crossing lines such as AD, BC. If you try to draw a convex figure like a rectangle, then a straight line can hit at most two of its sides (it comes in one side of the rectangle and goes out the other). The lines don't have to cross each other but the figure can't be convex.
