This is really two problems.

1. If x² - 12x ≥ 0 then |x² - 12x| = x² - 12x and hence
   |x² - 12x| = 8 is x² - 12x = 8 or x² - 12x - 8 = 0. This equation you can solve by factoring or by using the general quadratic.
   
   
2. If x² - 12x < 0 then |x² - 12x| = -(x² - 12x) and
   |x² - 12x| = 8 is -(x² - 12x) = 8 or x² - 12x + 8 = 0. This equation you can also solve by factoring or by using the general quadratic.
