This is an arithmetic sequence and d is the difference between successive terms. The 4th term is 47 and the 5th term is 52 so
d = 52 - 47 = 5
a1 is first term and hence you add d, four times to a1 to get to the 4th term 47. Thus you need to subtract d, four times from 47 to get back to a1.
a50 is the 50th term so you ned to add d to a1 fifty times to get to a50.
