here is a math question my niece gave me, grade 7
12-42, 8-26, 10-34, 9-30, 16-58
first day of school and this is what they give her no explanation

Hi Elizabeth,
My only thought is that the teacher is preparing the students for subtracting the larger of two numbers from the smaller. To me this seems strange at grade 7.
Anyway this procedure is not strange to anyone who lives in our climate. When I went to bed it was 8 degrees C and the temperatute dropped 26 degrees overnight so now it is -18 degrees C.
