Quandaries and Queries

My name is James. I am a student in the 10th grade so I guess my question is secondary ... Okay here goes nothing

Complete the Equation
Try to replace the blanks below with + or - to make the statement correct
1_2_3_4_5_6_7_8_9 = 1

My problem has to be simple but dang if I can get it... I already tried everything I could think of and my head hurts now...

I have tried starting with negative numbers. I have tried so many different ways... I know the answer has to be so easy. Like its sitting right in my face but I can't seem to get it... Please it is no longer homework but the teacher didn't give the answer either and it is driving me NUTS now...

Thank -you so much for the help

Hi James,

I'll give you a hint and get back to us if it doesn't help. The hint is

9 + 2 = 11
8 + 3 = 11
