Quandaries and Queries

My name is Chris
elementary question
I am a elem. school admin. looking to help one of my teachers.

When you have an addition problem you have two addends that equal a sum. Therefore . . .

I know the answer to a subtraction problem is the difference - what is the name of the numbers that make up a subtraction problem?

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

These are terms I didn't know but I searched and found

The traditional names for the terms of the subtraction in the formula
c − b = a
are minuend (c) − subtrahend (b) = difference (a).

I found this at Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

I then look for minuend and subtrahend in two dictionaries hoping to find synonyms but I found none.

Chris,

I just received this from Diane, who is a math and science consultant for a school board here.

In 15 - 8 = 7, 15 is the minuend and 8 is the subtrahend.
