Hi Greg,

When contractors say "yards" they actually mean "cubic yards", so the first task is to convert all the measurements to yards. There are 3 feet in a yard and 12 inches in a foot so

1000 ft = 1000/3 yards
20 feet = 20/3 yards
3 inches = 3/12 feet = 3/36 yards

Thus the volume of dirt you need is

  1000/3  20/3 3/36 = 185.2 cubic yards
