Question: 11 /12 + b = 5/6

My suggestion is that you immediately remove the fractions by multiplying both sides by an appropriate integer. In your example multiplying by 12 will accomplish this.

11 /12 + b = 5/6
12 (11 /12 + b) = 12 (5/6)
12 (11/12) + 12 b = 2 5
11 + 12 b = 10

Now solve for b
