Question: I have two problems i am stumped on I don't know how to help my daughter.

5(x-3)/4 =x+1
3(x+12)/5 =x +2

Hi Jennifer,

I would first eliminate the fractions. In your first problem I would do this by multiplying both sides by 4.

 5(x-3)/4 = x+1
4 5(x-3)/4 = 4 (x + 1)
5(x - 3) = 4 (x + 1)

Now expand both sides

5(x - 3) = 4 (x + 1)
5x - 3 5 = 4x + 4 1
5x - 15 = 4x + 4

Transfer all the x-terms to the left side by subtracting 4x from both sides.

5x - 15 = 4x + 4
5x - 15 - 4x= 4x + 4 - 4x
x - 15 = 4

Finally add 15 to both sides

x - 15 = 4
x - 15 + 15 = 4 + 15
x = 19

You can check the answer by substituting x = 19 into the first equation and verifying that the two sides are equal.

Now you try the second problem and verify your answer.
