If 7 times a number is decreased by 8, the result is the same as when 3 times the number is increased by 6. Find the number.

Try to understand what the english says

7 times a number: 7 number
is decreased by 8: - 8
the result is the same as: =
3 times the number: 3 number
is increased by 6: + 6

Putting this all together I get

7 number - 8 = 3 number + 6

I used the word number to stand for the unknown quantity, usually we use one letter like x so the equation is

7 x - 8 = 3 x + 6
