hi I am 14 years old and my name is Louise and I am in high school. I am in year 10 and I am about to take my first G.C.S.E exam and, I have been given some practice papers to do and , I am stuck on this question.

QUESTION: Avril is buying a computer. She finds two places with a discount."Classy Computing" is selling a computer that was £650 and NOW it has £50 off.
"WWW.CHEAPO.COM" is also selling a computer that is £650 but it NOW has 10% off.
WHICH IS CHEAPER? SHOW HOW YOU DECIDE.

I really hope you can help because working out percentages is NOT my strong point. Could you also tell me how to work out "percentages from a number" step by step, which I can use for future reference, as it would be very much appreciated.
THANKUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Louise,

Classy Computing

The price is £650 - £50 = £600.

The suffix cent means 100 so 10 percent is 10 per 100, ie 10 in every 100 or 10/100 . But 10/100 is 1/10 so CHEAPO is taking one-tenth off. One-tenth of £650 is  1/10 of £650 so the reduction is

1/10 £650 = £65

and thus the price is £650 - £65 = £585
