Quandaries and Queries

Hi,
We are filling in a hole left by the removal of an aboveground pool that was dug into the ground. The diameter is 25' across and the depth is 5'. I wondered how many cubic yards of dirt will be needed to fill this hole.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I would first put the dimensions into yards. There are 3 feet in a yard so you need to divide 25 and 5 by 3 to get a diameter of 8.33 yards (radius of 4.17 yards) and a depth of 1.67 yards. The hole is in the shape of a circular cylinder and the volume of a cylinder is given by

volume = radius2 height

so you have

volume = 4.172 1.67 = 90.9 cubic yards
