Question: How do I find the answer to this problem.

The average of 4 numbers is 5. I have 3 of the numbers already- 5,8,4,? How do i find out what the last number to give me the average of 5?

If the average of the 4 numbers is 5 then

(5 + 8 + 4 + missing number)/4 = 5

that is

(17 + missing number)/4 = 5

What is the missing number?
