Quandaries and Queries

I am a student and am wondering about the answer to this question.

56/2(3+1)

is the answer 7?

Hi,

First what's inside the brackets

56/2(4)

The question now is do you divide next or multiply? The subject line of your email was BEDMAS so if that is what you are using, D comes before M so divide

28(4)

then multiply

112.

My real answer to this question is that, as a mathematician, I would never write 56/2(3+1). It is just too easy to misinterpret. I would write (56/2)(3+1) which gives a result of 112, or 56/(2(3+1)) which gives a result of 7.
