Thelma,
Jordan is having a birthday party and she is helping her mother prepare. There are going to be 6 children at the party and each will receive a goody bag. Jordan's mom bought a bag of jelly beans and she has asked Jordan to divide up the bag of jelly beans into the goody bags, the same number in each bag, and Jordan can eat the jelly beans that are left over. How many does Jordan get to eat? That is, what is the remainder when the number of jelly beans in the bag is divided by 6?
Can the remainder be 8? No! If there are 8 remaining then Jordan can put one more in each goodie bag and then she is left with only 2. The remainder must be less than 6 or she could put one more jelly bean in each goody bag. In other words the remainder must be less than the divisor.
