Question from Ashley

What exactly is a factor of a number?

Hi Ashley,

An integer a is a factor of an integer b is a divides b, in other words b divided by a has a zero remainder. For example 3 is a factor of 6 since 6 divided by 3 = 2.

Penny

Hey Ashley,
A factor is rewriting an expression as a product of two or more expressions.
Take the number 12 for example:
We can write it as a product of its factors,
12=3*4
or as a product of its prime factors,
12=3*2*2.
I hope this clears things up for you.

Melanie
