Question from Cody, a student:

How do you go about simplifying something like this;

n-1/(n+1)! + n+1/n!?

Cody,

Find a common denominator.

Claude

Cody,

Remember that (n+1)! is just n!(n+1). So multiply the top and bottom of the second fraction by (n+1)/(n+1) to create the common denominator (n+1)!, then simplify your summed numerator. If you can factor the numerator and get factor(s) that are also in the denominator, start cancelling.
