Question from Danielle, a teacher:

I am teaching a student who cannot understand which operation to use when doing word problems. I have tried a number of different ways to show him...any suggestions?

Hi Danielle,

This is hard to address, since it depends so much on the particular student. One thing I can suggest is to have the student write his/her own word problems for you, and then explain it to you and have you solve it - that might give you some insight into how he/she sees "word problems". This might help you see if the student is carrying misconceptions that are getting in the way of understanding.
