Question from John, a student:

I have a bag of mulch that contains two cubic feet of mulch. If I speard it out at a hieght of one inch, in a three foot wide flower bed - how feet can I cover?

Hi John.

Ignoring the compression of the mulch, which will depend on all kinds of things, like the quality of the mulch itself, you can calculate this as follows:

one inch = 1/12 of a foot.

so (1/12) x 3 x L = 2 cubic feet. Because Depth x Width x (L)ength = Volume.

So 3L/12 = 2 and therefore L = 8 feet.

You can spread it out over 8 feet, John.
