Question from Kayla, a student:

how much water is in a pool which is 10m x 5m and is 1.5m to 2.5m in depth?

Kayla,

I assumed that was a gradual slope in the depth from 1.5 m to 2.5 m and drew a diagram.

pool

The volume os the area of the crosssection times the width of 5 m. The crosssection is a trapezoid and the area of a trapezoid is the average of the lengths of the parallel sides times th distance between the parallel sides. The length of the parallel sides are 1.5 m and 2.5 m so the average is (1.5 + 2.5)/2 m and the diatance between the parallel sides in 10 m.

I hope this hepps,
Penny
