Question from Marina, a student:

I am stuck with this substition please help.

-3x+y=1
5x+2y=-4

Hi Marina,

From the first equation y = 1 + 3x so you can substitute this into the second equation to obtain

5x + 2(1 + 3x) = -4 or
5x + 2 + 6x = -4

Solve for x.
