Question from melissa, a student:

how do you simplify:

(square root of)200

Hi Melissa,

You need to look for a factor of 200 that is a square. Let me show you with a different problem.

Simplify √75.

I know that 75 = 3 × 25 and 25 is a square, 25 = 52. Thus

√75 = √(3 × 25) = √3 × √25 = √3 × 5 = 5 × √3

Can you see how to write 200 as a product of two numbers where one of them is a square?
